Introduction to Computer Programming

Course Overview

Introduction to Computer Programming

This course introduces the fundamentals of object-oriented computer programming using a selection of modern programming languages and development tools. The covers the logical design of computer programs, simple input and output, data checking, formatting output and simple mathematical processing, such as counting, summing and finding minima and maxima. This is the first programming course taken by Computer Information Systems (CIS) majors and is a good introductory course for anyone interested in exploring computer programming. The course will explore and study developing fundamental programs using the Python programming language, developing fundamental programs using the JavaScript programming language, and explore and study creating fundamental Android Apps using the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) award-winning App Concept Tool App Inventor.

Students will receive exposure using a variety of text editors that is Python enabled for compiling and linking Python applications. These editors will be installed on every computer in the classrooms and the Student Academic Computing Center (SACC). The programming exercises will require Integrated Development Environments (IDE). In addition to the client IDE software, we will explore a couple of Internet services that provide online IDE services. Students may want to download the client side software products to their personal computers. This will permit students to easily view example code on their personal computer when not on the internet.

The course will require that you create several technical documents with your applications. Students should use a professional word processor to create documents such as Lab Reports. If you do not have a word processor at home, you may optionally choose the free open source professional document editing environment named Libre Office using the Libre Office Link below. Libre Office will run on a Windows, Mac, and Linux Operating Systems (OS). Libre Office is a Free Open Source Productivity Suite. I am a huge fan of Free Open Source Software.

MICROSOFT VISIO 2010 or 2013

During the course, students will be exposed to concepts and skill sets in Process Modeling and UML Modeling. Ultimately your process and flow models may be submitted using a word processor. However, it is strongly encouraged to put the extra effort in to model your assignments using a modeling tool. The modeling tool of choice for this class will be Microsoft Visio; you may also use Microsoft Word and its drawing tools, as the modeling assignments will not be very sophisticated.
