     Course Overview

This is a 7 week hybrid section of the course.  This means that this class meets in the classroom face to face and online.  The class will have activities, assignments and reading material online outside of the face to face classroom.  As a result of using the Canvas LMS,  in the course, all assignments, discussions and quizzes must be accessed online using the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).  The Online assignments and  activities will be accessed through the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).  These Online Assignments, will be a combination of Online Discussions, Online Quizzes, and Applied Database Assignments that can be accessed and submitted through Canvas.  We will also have in class practice activities that will prepare you for the distant homework assignments. It will be your responsibility to participate in many of the homework activities outside of the scheduled hours for the course. You will be responsible for covering portions of the class material outside of the face to face classroom, in this 7 week hybrid version of the course.  As the semester progresses, it will be to your advantage to read ahead and be prepared for the topic. The reference material in the modules will be available for your review throughout the semester. We begin this week by first going over the class Syllabus, and introducing some fundamental concepts and applications in database base management systems.  The syllabus is the binding contract that instructors have with their students. 

 

This is a 7 week regular face to face Version of CIS 205 An Introduction to Database Management. It will be your responsibility to read the chapters in the textbook, review the lecture slides, and review any additional supplement documents in the assigned module outside of the face to face class time. Our face to face encounters will focus primarily on many applied practice activities of the course along with lectures of topics and professional Database Management.  Once again, the in class activities will primarily focus on applied activities and lectures to reinforce the concepts covered in the textbook and the homework assignments. Since it is hybrid version of the course with both face to face meetings and online activities and assignments, we will have lectures on a variety of topics in modern database management.  Many portions of the in class meeting will focus on the activities that include the in class practice assignments and lab time to review problems that you are having in any applied assignment.  The quizzes, activities, assignments and exams are to be done outside of the face to face classroom time.  You are expected to do most homework Assignments outside the face to face class time. 

 

Course Description


Computer Information Systems 205 - Database Management Systems  4 credits (8 hours lecture, 2 hours lab per week)

This course provides an introduction to the design and implementation of relational data base management systems using Structured Query Language (SQL). The course covers fundamental data base design and

implementation techniques and provides hands-on exercises for applying the techniques to real-world problems through the use of Enterprise Level Database Management software such as MySQL or Oracle.

Prerequisites: CIS 103.
