TEXTBOOK: Intermediate Algebra for Math 118, Elayn Martin-Gay, Ninth Custom Edition for CCP

Learning Objectives

The purpose of this course is to learn the following: The real number system, polynomial expressions and equations, algebraic and rational expressions, linear equations and inequalities in one variable, absolute value, the Cartesian coordinate system, linear equations in two variables, quadratic equations, the laws of exponents and different types of exponents, radical expressions and problem solving. Particular emphasis is placed on translating mathematical theorems and ideas into understandable English, where possible..

Prerequisite

Math 017 or Math 118 placement (or higher)

Grades

Three tests are counted equally, including a final, comprehensive, computer exam by the Math Department, as well as a component for class participation. No calculators are allowed on any test. Tests are given at approximately equal intervals, with due notice, depending upon the material. A student who misses a test during the course, for good cause, must see me concerning a make-up as soon as they return to class.  A student who does not take the final exam must be given a grade of "F" or "I" (incomplete). If a student does not take the final exam, for good cause, they must contact me as soon as possible. Students must be familiar with and adhere to the College's Academic Honesty Policy.

College Policies

Standard college policies are observed in the classroom, including those involving attendance, food (no gum) and drink, and cellphones.

Classroom Deportment

Only behavior conducive to learning is permitted in the classroom. Promptness and full attendance at class is expected.

Disability Information

Students with disabilities should make arrangements with the Center on Disabilities and then speak to me privately for appropriate accommodations. Center on Disabilities: BG39; phone 215-751-8050; email: cod@ccp.edu.
