TEXTBOOK: Elementary Algebra, Bittinger, Sixth Custom Edition for CCP

Learning Objectives

This is a basic algebra course with approximately 20% of the material involving arithmetic. Key ideas include basic arithmetic calculations, evaluation and manipulation of algebraic expressions, equations and inequalities, polynomials and exponents, and factoring as indicated in the course outline below. Particular emphasis is placed on translating mathematical theorems and ideas into understandable forms. This is a pass/fail course. See CCP Handbook.

Prerequisite

FNMT 016 passing grade or satisfactory placement score

Grades

Three tests are counted equally, including a final, comprehensive, written exam by the Foundational Math Department, as well as a component for class participation. No calculators are allowed on any test. Tests are given at approximately equal intervals, with due notice, depending upon the material. A student who misses a test during the course, for good cause, must see me concerning a make-up as soon as they return to class. A student who does not take the final exam cannot be given a passing grade. Students must be familiar with and adhere to the College's Academic Honesty Policy.

College Policies

Standard college policies are observed in the classroom, including those involving attendance, food (no gum) and drink, and cellphones.

Classroom Deportment

Only behavior conducive to learning is permitted in the classroom. Promptness and full attendance at class is expected.

Disability Information

Students with disabilities should make arrangements with the Center on Disabilities and then speak to me privately for appropriate accommodations. Center on Disabilities: BG39; phone 215-751-8050; email: cod@ccp.edu.
