ABOUT THE COURSE: Cost accounting scope, concepts and terminology is explored. This exploration includes cycles of cost accounting and costing techniques; control over materials and labor expenditures; nature of factory overhead departmentalization and predetermined rules; and process cost.

This is a difficult course which requires the discipline on your part to keep up with the work and not fall behind. I tried to set the schedule allowing enough time for you to complete the assignments, prepare for the next chapter, and prepare for the exams. You must understand that accounting is a subject we learn by doing. You must be prepared to spend the time necessary for doing the assigned MyAccountingLab practice, and homework exercises or problems, Canvas quizzes and discussions as well as by closely reading the chapters.

Student Learning Outcomes: At the completion of this course you will be able to:

Describe and discuss the difference between Managerial and Cost Accounting.

Define variable and fixed costs, apply them to calculate contribution margin, break-even point and projected income given a budgeted sales volume.

Prepare a cost of goods manufactured statement, and a cost of goods sold statement, in both job order costing and process costing environments.

In a process costing environment, describe and discuss the weighted average and FIFO methods of assigning product costs to equivalent units produced.

Account for manufacturing overhead in a traditional costing system and in an activity-based costing system.

Calculate variances for materials, labor, and variable and fixed factory overhead and measure the impact each will have on net income.

Define and discuss absorption costing and variable costing, and calculate operating income under each system measuring the impact of each ending inventory values.

Calculate the effect of spoilage on transferred goods.

REQUIRED TEXT/COURSE MATERIALS: We will use MyAccountingLab along with the text Cost Accounting: A managerial emphasis, 16th edition by Homgren, Datar, Rajan ISBN 9780134475585 available at the CCP Main Campus bookstore location. If you buy a used text you must buy a MyAccountingLab access code for this text ISBN 9780133451474.

Follow the MyAccountingLab registration instructions given on the Canvas course page using the Announcements tab.

MyAccountingLab: This is an online resource center that will help you learn and master financial accounting. Access to MyAccountingLab is a requirement for this course. All graded homework problem/exercise assignments are accessed and completed using MyAccountingLab.

Canvas LMS: This is an internet based learning management system used at Community College of Philadelphia. You must have or obtain a CCP access user name and password for required access. All communication, announcements, and some graded assignments and examinations are located on Canvas.

Supplies: A four function calculator separate from a cell phone is helpful.

Communication: You are responsible for checking your Canvas LMS for emails or other related course announcements and assignments. All emails must be written in a professional and clear matter.

Attendance: You are required to attend class for each session. You are responsible for doing and completing any work covered during an absence from class. Missing an equivalent of two weeks of class may result in class withdraw under College Policy #5.

Electronic Communication Devices: As this is an online course, this classroom prohibition does not apply.

EXAMS: There will be three exams including a final exam given during the semester. They will be listed and taken on Canvas. The exams are only available for the scheduled time, so plan your time schedules. You have three attempts to obtain the highest point score.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS: Homework problem and exercise assignments are given that must be completed using MyAccountingLab. These assignments are an integral part of any course you take. To master the requisite skills for success in the course, you should complete all assignments. You must complete your homework problems and exercises submitting them by the announced due date posted in MyAccountingLab.

To help you with these assignments there are non-graded chapter quizzes on MyAccountingLab. You have three attempts on these MyAccountingLab assignments to obtain your highest grade scores. I strongly encourage you to submit all your MyAccountingLab homework, and Canvas LMS discussions and examinations well in advance of the deadline to avoid being unable to submit due do connectivity disruptions.

Any of the fore mentioned assignments not submitted by the due date will receive a zero. Connectivity disruptions will not be an acceptable excuse and you will not receive an extension to compete the assignment. If you are unable to submit your graded assignments on time and electronically, hard copies are not accepted.

Students who cannot submit assignments, discussions or exams timely because of emergencies (extreme illness, unexpected events, etc.) BEFORE THE DUE DATE or as soon as circumstances allow must contact this instructor. Be prepared to produce documentation of the emergency.

GRADES: Your grades will be based on the average of your grade scores on the three exams plus the chapter assignments/discussions submitted as instructed. The average exam grade point scores are 60 percent of your final grade, the chapter exercise/problem homework solving assignments completed are 30 percent of your final grade, and in-depth discussions are the remaining 10% of your final grade.

The instructor assessment of your learning progress is accomplished through scoring homework and examinations.

Grading System: The following provides the letter grade parameters:

A = Final grade score of 90 or above.

B = Final grade scores of 80 to 89.

C= Final grade scores of 70 to 79.

D = Final grade scores of 60 to 69.

F = Final grade scores under 60.

I = No incomplete grade is given.

Collusion and Plagiarism: Except when specifically permitted, all work that counts toward your grade is to be done independently and must be you own work. Evidence of cheating or plagiarizing will result in a possible failing course grade (F).

Course Conduct: It is expected that students will conduct themselves according to the guidelines found in the CCP College Policies and Procedures Article IV, 5.

Students receiving Title IV Financial Aid Funds: Students who receive Title IV financial aid funds and who withdraw from ALL their classes before completion of 60% of the term, i.e., the 10th week (or its equivalent for summer terms) may be required to return all or a portion of their financial aid award. If it is determined that funds must be returned to the financial aid programs, students must make satisfactory payment arrangements within 45 days of notification or they become ineligible for further financial aid.

A student receiving financial aid is required to make progress towards his or her program of study each term. To maintain eligibility for financial aid, the course completion rate is two-thirds successful completion (67%) and maintaining minimum GPA requirements. However, academic progress standards set by Financial Aid Regulations are stricter than the Colleges' Academic Standards and Progress Policy. Tutoring: Is available by appointment in the College Learning Laboratory at no cost to the student. Feel free to take advantage of this service provided by the College. However, you may find that qualified tutors for this course may not be available. As an alternative please use many of the course resources available on the Pearson MyAccountingLab online site for this course.

Discussion Forums: The interaction in discussion forums serves as a learning tool which is aimed at learning clear communication skills as well as working collaboratively discussing current issues and problems. Please respond in-depth to two discussion topics. Topics will be posted weekly.

College Closing Policy: College closings does not impact on this course as it is an online course.
